The emphasis on the philosophy of social science forms the core of the new CERES program by providing a robust foundation in ontology and epistemology, along with its linkages to research techniques and methods. The CERES PhD program offers an integrated approach tailored to a typical 4-year PhD journey, encompassing the three elements below:
- Integrated Courses: This approach combines the PhD training and short courses into a unified catalogue. For year 1 and 2 students, the program will be offered in a block, consisting of four modules. For students at a later stage of their PhDs, we offer various short courses.
- In-depth knowledge: The different courses are designed to provide greater coherence and depth, while fostering an organic connection between the philosophy of social science, topics and methods.
- Accounts for differing needs of PhDs: We take into account the different needs that the PhD students have. We consider the typical 4-year journey of a PhD, and we differentiate the needs between year 1and 2 on one hand and year 3 and 4 on the other. While we retain certain short courses that will be useful from a practical point of view, we pay lot of attention to ontological and epistemological debates in their own right. There is also emphasis on their concrete application in themes and methods where those debates are no longer seen as a background, but are continuously being articulated through the training of the students in every method and theme they are researching.
